Follow this list to remember everything on moving day.

 
Moving Reminder Checklist
 
1.
BOOK EARLY! Many movers and truck rentals are booked months in advance. Everybody wants to move at the end of the month due to the termination dates of leases and interest prorations!
2.
RECONFIRM your move date with your moving company approximately ONE MONTH prior to your move date.

NOTIFY YOUR MOVER OF ANY SPECIAL NEED ITEMS THAT NEED ATTENTION SUCH AS PIANOS OR ANY OTHER UNUSUALLY LARGE OR HEAVY OBJECTS. THEY MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL MANPOWER TO MOVE.

Record all of your expenses and save your receipts because some of your moving expenses may be tax deductible. Consult your tax advisor for more information.

Government related notifications
Personal property tax department of old municipality TO OBTAIN a prorated personal property TAX REFUND
Personal property tax department of your new municipality to register your personal property and to pay your prorated personal property tax. THIS MUST BE DONE TO RECEIVE YOUR COUNTY WINDSHIELD DECALS IN A TIMELY MANNER.
Division of Motor Vehicles for your license change of address and automobile registration-OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR ANNUAL OR BI-ANNUAL RENEWAL NOTIFICATION FOR YOUR AUTOMOBILE TAGS.

Pack a box with items that you will need as soon as you move

• Copy of mover’s cost estimate in case of disagreement

• Tool box for hookups e.g. icemaker, etc.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PACKING YOUR HOUSEHOLD GOODS
 
• Make your boxes a manageable size and not too heavy
• Label your box with specific room e.g. living room, front corner bedroom, not Charlie’s bedroom
• Fill partially full boxes with stuffing such as crumpled up paper to eliminate shifting and damage
• Pack heavy objects on the bottom. Pack fragile items on top and mark box as fragile
• Do not mix contents of different rooms in the same box
• Use plastic trash bags for drawer/dresser contents to eliminate weight
• Tape empty drawers closed

TYPES OF BOXES YOU MIGHT NEED
 
SMALL (1.5 cubic feet) – Used for small, heavy items such as books, record albums, tapes, CDs, tools, utensils, etc.
MEDIUM (3.1 cubic feet) – Pots, pans, shoes, purses, food stuffs, toys, blankets, linens, garden items, garage items, etc.
LARGE (4.5 cubic feet) – Fragile and bulky items such as lamps, shades, pictures, quilts, blankets, etc.
DISHPACK (5.2 cubic feet) – This box is made for fragiles and breakables. It is taller than most and has double thickness walls to cushion the contents.
WARDROBE – This is a portable closet. It comes complete with a hanging bar and transports clothes straight from closet to closet.
MIRROR CARTON/PICTURE CARTON – Specifically made for oversized artwork, mirrors, pictures, glass top shelves, or table inserts. Wrap your item in pads or bubble material first!
LAMP CARTON – This is a specialty item. It is a tall and narrow box that can be cut to fit a lamp body.
GRANDFATHER CLOCK BOX – Specialty item for safe handling and/or clock storage.
MOST MOVERS AND TRUCK RENTAL COMPANIES OFFER MOST OF THE ABOVE ITEMS.

MANY WILL REFUND MONEY TO YOU FOR UNUSED BOXES, ETC., ONCE YOUR MOVE IS COMPLETE.
